On March 12, 2024, a 13-member delegation from the Asian Development Bank (ADB), led by Country Director Mr. Yong Ye, convened with Chairman of WAPDA, Engr Lt Gen Sajjad Ghani (Retd), for discussions on water and hydropower projects.
The ADB delegation, currently in Pakistan to conduct a Country Portfolio Review, engaged in a conclusive session with the Chairman concerning various projects. Matters pertaining to financing for WAPDA projects, specifically Kurram Tangi Dam Stage-II, Naulong Dam, and the Pattan Hydropower Project, were deliberated during the meeting.
In attendance were key figures including Member (Finance), Member (Water), GM (C&M) Water, GM (Hydro) Planning, GM (Projects) South, and GM (Projects) North.
The delegation received a comprehensive overview of WAPDA’s development portfolio, emphasizing the organization’s commitment to long-term sustainable strategies aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDGs), aimed at fostering economic growth through water, food, and energy security. Updates on the status of Naulong Dam, Kurram Tangi Dam Stage-II, and the Patan Hydropower Project were presented, along with proposals for Mohmand Dam, Diamer Basha Dam, Dasu Hydropower Project Stage I&II, and Atta Abad Lake Hydropower Project for potential ADB financial assistance.
Chairman WAPDA extended gratitude to ADB for its ongoing support in project implementation within the water and hydropower sectors. He expressed optimism for continued collaboration, hopeful that ADB would extend financial aid to WAPDA’s projects outlined in its development agenda.
